My Online Business Adventure

I have a confession to make.  Last week I got distracted from work, and I ended up spending more time leaping up and down on the sofa than in sitting in front of my computer screen.  Still, it’s something that only happens every four years, so I do think I can be let off the hook for this one!  I also learned a lot about the way sport helps to inspire and create positive feeling, and this led me to think how you can use the tactics of an Olympic winner in your home business.

Here in Great Britain we have been truly inspired by “Team GB” and our most successful Olympics for one hundred years.  It has generated a new national pride and a surge of interest in our forthcoming hosting of the event in four years’ time.

One comment that really stood out for me (it was either Lord Coe or Jonathan Edwards - I really can’t remember) was something like this:  When young people train for a sport, they learn discpline and self-belief, and even if they do not succeed in that sport, it will help them to get ahead in any other area of life.

The kind of training you get in a sport is like a kind of physical life coaching.  I must admit, this thought has only really just occurred to me.  Although I’ve always loved big sporting events like the Olympics and Wimbledon, I’ve never really rated the importance of sport in terms of individual or national self belief.  This year’s Olympics has brought this home to me.

So, how can you use the spirit of the Olympics to help you in your home business or other areas where you want to succeed?  Here are just a few of my own ideas about Olympian ideals that can move you towards Gold!

• Do the work.  In a press conference, Michael Phelps talked about what his coach would say to him on days when he didn’t feel like training: Every day that you work is “money in the bank”.  You keep putting money in the bank every day, and you can draw it out when you need it.  Well, he certainly was able to draw out 8 Olympic Gold medals after all his hard work.  The message for us is: Do whatever you need to do to make your business a success, and do it every day, and in time you will be able to reap the rewards.
• Stay focused.  Watch any athlete, gymnast, diver or other individual sportsman as they prepare, and you will see how focused they are on what they are about to do.  They have an ability to shut out the roar of the crowd, to dispel negative thoughts and ignore what may be going on around them and to concentrate on their action.  The message for us is:  Concentrate on the things that will work for you and don’t allow your personal life, constant messages and the “noise” of a crowded email inbox to tempt you from the path you are following.
• Believe In Yourself.  No successful sportsperson ever begins a game or race with the expectation of losing.  No matter what the odds are, you have to believe that you can win gold.  Self belief is part of their training.  The message for us:  Get trained in self belief because without it you don’t stand a chance.
• Visualise.  So many times I have heard gold medallists, when interviewed, say that they have visualised over and over again winning gold, or being up on that podium.  The message for us:  Visualisation helps to keep us focused and opens doors to opportunities.  It gets us out of bed every morning because we are inspired to take action to make that visualisation come true.  Think big, dream big and make it happen.
• Be prepared to go beyond what is comfortable.  Watch sprinters, distance runners, rowers or other strongly physical sports competitors as they strive to get to that finishing line and you will see them putting themselves beyond their pain barriers, beyond what seems possible and to break world records over and over again in their efforts to be the best.  The message for us:  Take yourself out of your comfort zone as much as possible.  Success does not come through staying within the familiar or playing safe.  Strive to go beyond what you think you are capable of.

If you live in the UK you can be forgiven for feeling a little gloomy at the moment.  If the weather wasn’t bad enough, there’s the news headlines telling us that the dreaded “R” word is upon us (or if it isn’t now, it soon will be).  In America this has been rumbling on for weeks and it seems that global economy is continuing to sink.  Many people all over the world may be wondering what to do during a recession.

I tried putting this phrase into Google just now, just to see if there were any interesting recession solutions.  I nearly fell asleep reading the results.  Buy this, sell that, reduce spending on this, generally tighten your belts and plan what you’ll do if you lose your job.  Yawn.

However, there is one very exciting and interesting thing that can be done right now, and I do believe that now is perfect timing.

While you still have a job why not invest a very small amount of money in a home business?

While you will not get a return immediately, that’s fine because it’s unlikely that a recession will hit very hard to start with and it could be months before things really start getting tough.  By that time you could have set up a home biz website, learned how to get traffic to it and started earning an income that will grow enough that you will never need to worry about recession again.

If you’re reading this in July it’s even more perfect timing because we are just coming to the end of the “quiet” period in online affiliate marketing.  In August things will start to pick up - and there will be more and more people looking to start a home business because the threat of recession will be looming even larger.

Yesterday I attended a Success University seminar in Coventry. There was some interesting information that I picked up that I would like to share here and review Success University’s plans for the future in the UK.

The day was hot and sunny, but there must have been well over 200 people packed into the venue and some of them had come a long way to be there.

There were three speakers, including motivational speaker, Craig Goldblatt, and the focus was a mixture of information about developments in SU, practical advice on recruiting members and motivational talks.

I learned some very interesting statistics about SU in the UK. What I hadn’t know was that in February 2007 there were only 205 SU members in the UK. There are now around 10,000 - and the business is about to go into its sharp growth stage. This means that being a member of Success University right now is pretty good timing!

With 60 million UK residents, that means we have a wealth of opportunity all around us.

The other exciting news was that Success University is planning to (and already doing so in some cases) introduce their personal development program into universities, colleges, schools and churches, and are even going so far as to reduce fees for college and university students. Imagine our children and young people (who are, after all, our future) having access to personal growth training at such a young age. Imagine, too, coming out of college and having such an opportunity to create wealth whilst following whatever career you want.

Whole companies, too, are getting in on the act. One large mobile phone company in the UK is introducing SU to its staff. Success University is planning to introduce its programs to other companies.

The rest of the seminar was very much about using the product, self-belief and motivational tips. I won’t go into those right now because it would make this blog too long, and you can access all this stuff by becoming a member of Success University (if you are not one already). I will just say one thing that really stood out: Whatever you tell yourself about yourself, your brain will believe and create it as a reality. Tell yourself you are poor, and you will be. Tell yourself you are rich, and you will be. I know which I would rather believe.

However, I have to admit to sometimes getting tired of seeing everything in terms of dollars - and so many deals and offers you see online are only available for US residents. So I thought I’d put together a few UK money saving ideas that I have come across, that I hope will be of interest to my fellow Brits.

First of all is a company that I have used twice, and each time received cash refunds of several hundred pounds. They’ve been in the news recently, and are really helping people to get back unfair bank charges and mis-sold Payment Protection Insurance.

You can find them at Conkers.co.uk They really do work hard for you, and you don’t pay them until after you have received your refund (payment is a percentage of the money they get back for you). If they don’t get you a refund, you don’t pay them - as simple as that! There’s no way of losing on this.

The next offer looks useful if you don’t have a fax machine. You can try it for 30 days for free as well. It’s a service that allows you to send and receive fax messages by email. Here’s the link: Efax Plus

If you are interested in getting paid to do online surveys, here’s one that’s only available in Australia and the UK: SurveyPayor.

I’m not quite sure how this one works, but it looks like a good deal - a £250 petrol voucher is not to be sneezed at! Free Gas Card

Payday Loans offer small loans (up to £1000) even if you have bad credit history. I don’t know what the interest rate is on this, but it certainly seems worth checking out. I’ve never found a company that loans small amounts like this before.
