Living a Deeper Life Means You Have To Stretch

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Every Monday morning I get a motivational newsletter from a guy called Neil Crofts who owns the website, Authentic Transformation.   He has great tips on living a deeper life and living authentically and passionately.  I loved the one I got this morning, so I thought I would share it with you.

Stretch”

It is very tempting to hide behind the mask of prudence, to temper our efforts with caution, to avoid exposure to risk or danger.

And not just tempting, it is positively encouraged in our society to play safe.

The English have a subtle double-speak to indicate when you have gone too far: “you are brave”, (with the emphasis on ‘brave’) translates as - “you are a mad and irresponsible fool”.  [Lol - I know this one - I’ve heard it so many times! Ros]

“The tallest trees catch the most wind”, “keep your head below the parapet”, “play it safe” - are the subtle mantras fed into our consciousness.

But where does it lead? Where do you get to with a life lead below the parapet? Do you get to your full potential? Do you achieve the extraordinary? Do you do amazing things?

So where is the edge? If our cultural conditioning places such an early limit on our potential, how do we know where too far is?

The reality is that we don’t. The “edge” is not a constant thing, it is a constantly moving, morphing thing. It depends on so many variables that, like the weather or financial markets, the only way to have any certainty about even the very short term, is to get very close to it and make subtle adjustments the whole time.

Colin Chapman, the mercurial founder of Lotus Cars and genius motor racing engineer and innovator used to say that “Any car which holds together for more than a race is too heavy”. Meaning that if you want to excel, you have to be prepared to face the edge of failure.

If we want to innovate, change, succeed, be fulfilled or do anything meaningful in life, love or business, we simply have to be prepared to stretch.

Stretch is where the learning and development starts. If we don’t stretch we don’t improve. If we don’t push ourselves beyond our comfort zone, nothing changes, we just loop around, same old, same old.

What is next for you?

More of the same, or more of life?

Neil Crofts is a coach, consultant and facilitator and is passionate about helping people to live more meaningful lives.  You can find his website and services here.

Are you playing safe?  Where do you want to change?  Your job, your relationships, your fianances?  Go on, choose a better life - think big; be extraordinary.  Living a deeper life depends on you and how far you are prepared to stretch.

The Power of Positive Thinking

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

Do you ever wake up in the morning filled with anxiety and worries about the coming day, or the future in general? What do you do about it? Do you carry on building on those thoughts, or do you do something about it?

As a life coach, I know how important it is to use positive thoughts to change your life. But sometimes it seems to be an enormous effort to stop negative thinking and turn your experience of the day around. In the morning rush and chaos, it is difficult to find the time to focus on positive thoughts!

This morning I woke up worrying about how soon I would start making the income that I need. This is what I did.

First of all, I became aware that I was thinking in a negative way. I then decided not to give my thoughts any power, so I focused on the other things I needed to do to get the day going.

Then, when I had a few moments of peace (it was while I was walking the dog), I started visualising how my life would be when I had my goal income. I also looked around me and really appreciated my life as it is now (this is really important!) - the sun was out, it was a quiet country lane just a few moments from my front door, and my dog was as happy as ever to be out.

When I got back home, I looked at two inspirational messages I get sent to my inbox every day (this is a really great way to start the day - try the Notes from the Universe from Tut.com). By that time, I was really believing in my ability to achieve my financial goals. I said a few affirmations, and started my working day in a good mood.

A few minutes later, a client of mine rang to ask if I would mind helping him out with a book he wanted to write. Did I mind? Er…. no. This client is someone I trust and I know he’ll pay me well and quickly.

So, it really doesn’t have to take too much to use the power of positive thinking to change your life, and the changes can be immediate!

Works for me.
