Seven Tips for Overcoming Fear of Failure

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

Here’s my latest article on overcoming fear of failure:

Fear of failure is often the very thing that will cause people to fail.  In fact, much of the time, it stops us from even starting a project.

While this fear will keep us from success, it also prevents us from enjoying life in the way it should be enjoyed.

Why do we have such fear, and why is it so debilitating?

Fear of failure has often been developed over a period of time and may originally have been triggered by a need for acceptance and approval from those who are important to us.

When we are young, we all need this acceptance, but people who receive little praise for their efforts or have had constant negative feedback while growing up unfortunately learn that no matter how hard they try, it will never be good enough.  As adults, any potential project seems doomed before it’s even started.

This lack of self belief feeds on itself, and many people become reluctant to try anything new and they can become trapped in an ordinary and unfulfilled life.

Fortunately, no-one has to stay with this mind-set and it is possible for anyone to overcome their fear of failure.  The seven steps below are a starting point.

Dreaming Big Is the Key To Making Our Dreams Come True

Making Our Dreams Come True: Self-Education vs. Formal Education

“Formal education will make you a living but self education will make you a fortune.”

This is a quote from Jim Rohn, one of the top 50 motivational speakers in personal development.  He is also one of the trainers at the top online personal development site, Success University.

When I was at school I wasn’t really that bothered about whether I got an A in Maths or History.  I was too worried about whether people liked me or not, where I could get the latest pop star photos or whether my skirt was the trendiest length.

Formal education seems to happen despite the student.  We come out with our varied grades and reports of “Could do better”, but somehow we get some sort of an education.  Unfortunately, going to school is never the choice of the pupil, it is a requirement.  In most Western countries it is the common consensus that you must go to school so you can get a job and earn a living.

Perhaps this is why most of us achieve only average results.  We are not doing it out of love, but because we have to.  It’s the law.

However, self-education has far more power because we only come to it through personal choice.  It is also our responsibility to take it on and achieve the results we want.  This gives us self-motivation and we are far more likely to succeed.

Education for Success: New Ways to Personal Development

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

You will often hear it said that the secret to success is to emulate those who are already successful.

But is education for success really that simple? In order to effectively imitate another person, don’t you need to spend some time studying that person’s character and habits? Even if you can do this accurately, a process of trial and error would have to take place before you find the right fit for your purposes.

All the same, the concept is a good one. Learning from others is one of the best ways of accelerating your progress. The experience of those who have achieved their goals can help you avoid mistakes and make better choices.

How do you find these successful people? How can you discover the roadmap that will pave your way to success without the time consuming trial and error search?

How To Achieve Goals with Vision

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

“We all know what a goal is, but vision is a topic of confusion for many.” This is what the founder of Success University, Matt Morris, wrote in a recent newsletter. Knowing how to achieve goals is a question of how well you can see them.

Morris goes on to say: “your vision is how you see yourself. You can set goals all day long, but if you cannot truly see yourself achieving them, your goals will never be realized. To accomplish a goal, you must truly expect to achieve it.”

Yesterday I wrote an article on this topic. You can see it here: How to Achieve Goals with Vision

It is not enough just to set goals. We must SEE them, feel them, taste them and truly believe they are possible, right here, right now.

It’s an enjoyable exercise you can do every day: See yourself living in the house, driving the car, sailing the yacht, achieving success… whatever it is that you want in your life. Do this in the morning and you’ll be motivated for the rest of the day!

If you more training in how to achieve goals, I recommend Success University, which has excellent online courses (one of which I will be reviewing soon). You could also look at Mindtools, which also provides courses in goal setting and achieving success.
